Debbie Denby, Debbie's Sweet Cabin, Hull Trinity Market

Debbie Denby runs Debbie’s Sweet Cabin in Hull’s recently redeveloped Trinity Market, which is situated in the oldest part of Hull, East Yorkshire, the Trinity Quarter, on the stunning Humber Estuary.

Debbie grew up in Hull and has fond memories of the market. In 1993, she saw an opportunity to launch a newsagents’ business in the market – and hasn’t looked back.

Hull is the UK City of Culture for 2017. The market was redeveloped as part of these celebrations and Debbie’s business has changed to cater to new demographic of market customers – focusing on traditional sweets.

She started the business as a traditional newsagents, selling newspapers, magazines and tobacco, as well as refreshments and sweets. Over the years, she's let less-profitable lines go.

Debbie is positive about her business and the future of the Trinity Market. She recognises that businesses in traditional retail markets need to specialise in order to attract new customers.

Her focus has always been customer experience. Debbie loves that in traditional retail markets, traders meet customers with diverse backgrounds. Debbie said:

"The best thing about market trading is the diversity of customers you meet. You never know who's going to walk up to your counter to purchase your products."

There are huge opportunities for start-up business in Hull. The council run the indoor market but may privately run events, such as craft fairs and street food markets are popping up all over the city.
